The launch of Volume 2 of the GAFICS Series on Some Outstanding Ghanaians
comes on at 4:00 pm on Tuesday 15 September 2026 at the Ghana Academy of
Arts and Sciences, West Airport, Accra.
Many Ghanaians have made immense contributions to their communities, their
country, and the global community – yet their stories remain largely unknown to
the public. The book recounts the life stories of exceptional Ghanaians,
highlighting how some triumphed over adversity, and with unyielding
dedication, achieved excellence in their fields of work. The 475-page book
describes the inspiring life stories of these iconic Ghanaians. The individuals
featured in the Volume 2 include national and international public servants,
industry leaders and a distinguished farmer.

AN EVENING WITH OUR GAFICS ELDERS” SERIES

The Association’s series on “An Evening with our GAFICS Elders” is intended
to offer GAFICS elders (>85 years) an opportunity to share their experiences
and insights into their career journey and other anecdotes in a relaxed
storytelling session, often in the comfort of their home.
The first of this series was a visit to Dr. Andrew Anane Arkutu, a founding
member and first President of GAFICS (2001 – 2005) on 30th July 2025.
Several Executives and other members joined the visit with goodwill and to
learn more about Dr Arkutu’s experiences, career and personal life experiences
and document lessons for the association and beyond. The GAFICS past
President shared valuable insights into the potential role of GAFICS in national
development, through the sharing of the extensive skills and experiences of its
members as a way of giving back to the Ghanaian society. The visit to Dr.
Arkutu ended with a nice reception.
The second event in the “An Evening with our GAFICS Elders” series took
place on Wednesday, 22nd April 2026 at Nana Dr S.K.B. Asante’s residence in
Accra. Dr. Asante recounted his experiences from his youthful days and the

many incidents that directed the course of his life from Asokore in the Ashanti
Region, to Achimota school for his secondary education, that ultimately opened
up opportunities for his legal education in Ghana and abroad, and ultimately
into international wok, including with the United Nations. Nana and his family
hosted the evening with pleasure and warmth.
As part of a collaborative agreement between GAFICS and the Ghana Institute
of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), about 10 students from
GIMPA joined the event as a learning opportunity.

Presentation by the United Nations Resident Coordinator at the
159th Ordinary meeting

At the GAFICS 159th Ordinary meeting held at the GIMPA Conference Centre
on 23rd April 2026, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Mr Zia
Choudhury, made a presentation titled “UN @ 80: Recalibrating the United
Nations in a World That No Longer Agrees with Reality.”
In March 2025, the UN Secretary-General launched the UN@80 reform process
– a system-wide overhaul to modernize, streamline, and make the global
organization more efficient by the end of 2026. Mr. Choudhury gave a brief
overview and update on the UN@80 process (i.e. linked to 80 years of existence
of the United Nations Organization) and highlighted some of the challenges
facing the UN system and, more broadly, the multilateral system. He noted that
the UN@80 process builds on some earlier processes, including the UN@75
Declaration, the Summit of the Future, and the subsequent Pact for the Future.
The UN@80 is not so much a formal reform programme, but a convergence of
different pressures on the UN system, which has led the Secretary-General to
highlight the need for the organization to adapt to a changing global
environment. The rationale behind this is the recognition, that multilateralism is
under immense strain due to geopolitical rivalries, declining trust in multilateral
institutions such as the United Nations, and a growing gap between global
ambitions and what the international community can deliver.
He concluded that these developments make it necessary for the UN to reflect
deeply on how it can adapt and respond to the realities of today’s world.

A DAY OUT TO AKOSOMBO ON 18TH JUNE 2026

On Thursday 18th June 2026, some members of the association took a day’s trip
to Akosombo, Eastern Region, where an informal meeting of GAFICS was held
at the Afrikiko Hotel. This offered an opportunity of a relaxed atmosphere for
members, away from the hustle and bustle of Accra. Members were also able to
undertake a boat cruise on the Volta Lake within the Akosombo enclave, as well
as a tour of the Akosombo township. In line with the usual custom, the
celebration of birthdays of members that occurred in the 2nd Quarter (April –
June) of the year took place at the Afrikiko Hotel with merry making.

ASSISTANCE TO COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY THE 2023 AKOSOMBO DAM SPILLAGE

VENUE: AKOSOMBO, EASTERN REGION, ACCRA, ACCRA

In October 2023, following the Akosombo Dam spillage that led to the flooding
of low-lying communities along the Volta River, some districts in the Greater
Accra and Volta Regions were seriously affected, with about 35,900 people,
including children, displaced. GAFICS joined other benevolent organisations
and provided financial and material support to some of the affected
communities in the Volta Region.
