On Wednesday 13 August 2025 the Ghana Association of Former International Civil Servants (GAFICS) presented a cash donation of Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (20,000 GHC) as its contribution towards medical equipment and supplies to the Mepe Health Center and used clothing from GAFICS members to the Mepe Development Association for distribution to communities which were victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage over a year ago.
In his speech at the Palace of the Paramountcy of Mepe on the occasion, DR William Collins Asare, President of GAFICS stated that their association was fully aware of the environmental damage and health consequences of spillages all over the world lingered on for a considerable length of time. Their contribution was a reminder that GAFICS still appreciated the resilience of the Mepe and other communities that suffered from the aftermath of the spillage and was committed to helping in any way possible.
Dr Asare then proceeded to provide a brief background to GAFICS and its objectives.
He informed the gathering that the Ghana Association of Former International Civil Servants (GAFICS) was incorporated in Ghana under the Companies Code 1963 (Act 179) on 26 September 2000 and formally inaugurated in April 2001.
It is made up of a pool of Ghanaians with expertise and work experience in governance, international relations and diplomacy, peace keeping, development, scientific and socio-economic and related fields. The members are former officials of the United Nations Organisation, the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, the African Development Bank, African Union, ECOWAS, the Commonwealth Secretariat and other international inter governmental institutions.
The objectives of the Association include the following:
- To contribute to the social and economic development of the country by placing the skills and expertise of its members at the disposal of the Government as well as other Ghanaian organizations and institutions. To avail the professional and specialist expertise of its members through a shareable up-to-date database.
- To foment national debate and discussion on development issues and other topic of national interest through publications, lectures, seminars, workshops and other activities.
- To assist Ghanaian professionals returning home after serving in international organizations to resettle, reintegrate and adjust to local conditions.
- To foster social interaction among members through the development and implementation of suitable programmes and activities.
GAFICS members are appreciative of the sound education they received in Ghana which helped to open doors of employment for them in major institutions inside and outside the country. These men and women played key roles in diverse positions throughout the world. Having retired from their formal employment and now settled in Ghana, they are desirous to give back to the society by placing their skills and expertise at the disposal of the nation.
